On 30th January, 1916, 12th Royal Fusiliers of 17 Brigade, 24th Division left their camp at Ouderdom and moved into the front line trenches near Hell Fire Corner in the Ypres salient where they remained until 5th February on which day they moved back in support to the Zillebeke dug-outs. They were still in these dug-outs on 9th February when, at 11.30am, 12 heavy shells dropped in and around their position. 5 men were wounded and another 2 were killed, one of them being Thomas Scanes. |
